The song was written by five people, who were members of the band Deep Feeling -
Martin Jenner, John Swail, Dave Green, Derek Elsen and Graham Jarvis made up the
line-up. They were all talented musicians. They are not to be confused with the other band
called Deep Feeling who were known as The Hellions in the 1960s. This other band featured
Jim Capaldi but that act was short-lived and had broken up before these five used the name.
They released "Sweat, Dust And Red Wine" as a single on DJM Records in 1971. The catalogue number for this was DJS 237.

Swail had another alias - Guy Darrell - and he had a big hit called "I've Been Hurt"
on the Santa Ponsa label, the label owned by Roger Easterby and Des Champ,
the producers of Chicory Tip. Santa Ponsa is also the name of their publishing
company. Easterby and Champ also produced Deep Single's version of the song.
Darrell also recorded for Easterby's Route label, which was launched by Chicory Tip
and their final single "Survivor".

Martin Jenner worked as a top session guitarist, playing with the likes of Eric Clapton,
Elton John, Cliff Richard, Barbara Dickson and Chris Rea. He is a left handed guitar
player who is also very efficient on the steel guitar.

Deep Feeling recorded just one album on DJM Records, the eponymous "Deep Feeling"
in 1971. It didn't feature the "Sweat, Dust And Red Wine" song - instead the album had
just six tracks on it. Swail sang lead vocals on five songs while the acclaimed "Classical
Gas" was an instrumental which became a hit for Mason Williams in 1968. You can hear
the full eight minute version here and see images of the five guys from this video.

Chicory Tip's version of the song first appeared on their album "Son Of My Father"
and one presumes that this was another song given to them by their producers who
had a knack of getting hold of songs and sharing them between their acts, and often
many of their roster would record them.  The synthesizer was used to nice effect on
the song and the "na na nas" gave it an easy listening feel. One of Chicory Tip's most
accessible and tuneful songs.

Na na na na na na na, Na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na, Na na na na na na

I can hear you, I do, yes I do
Sometimes miss you, I do, yes I do

Sweat Dust And Red Wine, Seems like I'll go blind
Can't walk a straight line to you
I hear my name, you call, you call, you call, you call, you call to me
But I just can't see, don't drink my red wine, let me be

My love's wasted on you, woman on you
Time I've wasted, it's true, what can I do

Repeat Chorus

Na na na na na na na, Na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na, Na na na na na na

Repeat Chorus twice
